PANZ Trainer Profiles

Chris Jansen
Chris Jansen has an extensive range of training and facilitation experience both in New Zealand and also in Singapore, Australia and the United States. He currently lectures in Outdoor and Experiential Education at the University of Canterbury. He has worked as a counsellor with the Department of C.Y.F.S. "AIKI" programme working with adolescent offenders and their families and in substance abuse treatment programmes in Atlanta, Georgia and Hong Kong. Chris taught physical education for 6 years at Mangere College in Manukau prior to which he worked as a youth worker with Te Ora Hou in Christchurch. He has an M.Ed. Counselling and is a registered teacher and member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors.
Liz Penman
Liz Penman is a certified trainer with Project Adventure Inc. and has an immense depth of experience in working with diverse groups from the education, community and corporate sectors incorporating adventure based learning techniques and activities. Liz was originally a teacher of physical education, health education and outdoor education and since 1992 she has run her own successful business, Adventure Works NZ Ltd and as a PA trainer has worked extensively with groups throughout New Zealand and also in Singapore, Korea, Japan, Italy and the United States.
Claire Wyatt
Claire Wyatt works as manager and counsellor at Adventure Development Limited Christchurch and prior to this was a tutor at Whenua Iti Outdoor Pursuits Centre Trust in Nelson delivering leadership training and motivational courses using the outdoors, as well as training others in the use of adventure. She has a Masters in Counselling from Massey University and has worked as a counsellor at Motueka High School. Claire has ten years experience delivering adventure-based training that began in an outdoor centre in England followed by moving to the Hamilton Skills Centre working with unemployed young people in wilderness environments.

Contract Trainers

Maria Deutsch
Maria Deutsch has been involved in group facilitation for many years. Her experience ranges from implementing Wilderness workshops designed for groups such as after school programmes, Special Needs Teachers, families and challenging youth, to Team Development & Communication Workshops for staff of various organisations. She has also been involved in facilitation specific to Mãori settings including conflict resolution, training facilitators in strategic planning, and organisational evaluation and development Maria also has a role in mentoring community organisations and supervision of staff.
Greg Jansen
Greg Jansen currently teaches at Kaiapoi High School in the Physical Education Department where he is the Teacher in Charge of the Adventure School. He is also involved in working alongside the Whanau classes and is a Pastoral Dean. His most recent initiative is leading the Restorative Practices Team with Richard Matla. He brings a vast wealth of experience, ranging from working with marginalised and dysfunctional youth and leading Alternative Education Programmes, to training for Project Adventure New Zealand and Outdoor Instructing both in New Zealand and overseas.
Lyn Jansen
Lyn Jansen works as a Specialist Clinician at the STOP Trust in Christchurch with a programme that works with children and adolescents who have engaged in sexually harmful behaviour. She has a Masters in Counselling through Massey University. Her background is in Education teaching Health & Physical Education in Auckland and resource teacher of learning and behaviour (R.T.L.B.). She is a contract trainer with PANZ and also worked for 5 months in Atlanta, Georgia with Project Adventure's adolescent therapeutic programme.
Tanya Laybourn
Tanya Laybourn has ten years experience designing and delivering adventure based programmes, as an Auckland based outdoor pursuits instructor. With Adventure Specialties Trust she worked predominately in areas of youth, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and women’s programmes. Later she managed and delivered the three week residential wilderness component of Project K in South Auckland. She is currently based in Wellington where among other things she facilitates the adventure based learning of two active under 5s.
Hamish Moore
Hamish Moore is the Founder and Director of the Kimihia Adventure Programme - an alternative school in Christchurch which uses adventure as it's primary teaching and motivating vehicle. Hamish has a Bachelor of Parks and Recreation Mgmt specializing in Outdoor Education and Recreation with special populations and is a registered teacher. He has also worked as a tour guide and ski instructor in Europe and developed a management training programme in Norway in 1997 - 1998.
Lee-anne Parore
Lee-anne Parore has developed a strong background in Outdoor Education including significant experience using ropes courses with a wide variety of groups and programmes throughout New Zealand over the last 10 years. A particular interest of Lee-anne's is exploring our current use of ABL and ropes course mediums in order to provide optimal learning opportunities for our clients.
Anna Russell
Anna Russell has 15 years experience of helping organisations raise their performance through the development of people, as well as broad experience in general Human Resources. She began her career in experiential learning, using the outdoors as a vehicle for personal and team development. Most recently Anna was an HR Regional Manager responsible for building leadership capability and providing strategic HR advice to senior managers responsible for around 2000 employees. Her previous roles include Staff Development Consultant, Leadership Development Advisor, and she has also held positions in business development, HR development and operational management.
Eric Schusser
Eric Schusser is a founding member of Project Adventure New Zealand and is currently Head of Outdoor Education at Dunstan High School in Alexandra. He has worked extensively utilising intervention and prevention approaches with adolescents, developing peer mentoring and leadership among youth and has initiated community development approaches in Wellington and Central Otago. He has experience facilitating and coaching with a wide variety of populations and has presented widely at conferences both nationally and internationally.
